With the introduction of the Gaia Cash Shop on November 2, 2007, a new type of item was made available-- ones that "evolve" with time. They do not need to be equipped in order to evolve, it happens automatically when an announcement for it is posted. When this happens, a new generation is created, and replaces the generation in the cash shop before it (if it's still being stocked). All existing generations of an item will evolve at the same time, unless it has already reached the final stage.

GENERATION IS NOT STAGE OF GROWTH.
This seems to confuse a great deal of Gaians. The generation number on your item will never change, it is there to indicate when it was released and how far behind the first set it is.
